Trait and behavioral offer many different perspectives on what constitutes an effective leader. Contingency and path- were developed as a result of the variety of traits that effective leadership and the restrictive nature of behavioral .
In various ways these theories address the the situation influences effective leadership.

Fiedler’s contingency is discussed in detail. The discussion emphasizes his contention that no one leadership style is most effective, but rather that there must be a match between the style of leadership and the environment in which the leader is operating.
Also emphasized is Fiedler’s belief that it is more effective to change the job to fit the individual than to try to change the individual.
The impact of this philosophy on selection and is examined as well.
