The organization and the environment

The environment is not simply “everything out there” but rather consists of those factors, external to the organization, that influence the performance of the organization and over which it has little or no control.
Though organizations do not directly control their environments, they do have an impact on the environment in many ways and through several mechanisms.
Deciding what that impact should be requires managers to gather information about the external environment through the scanning methods of surveillance and search.
